5 Tips for a Smoother Insurance Claim
Nobody wants to file a claim, but when you need to, these tips help the process go as smoothly as possible.

Filing an insurance claim isn't anyone's favorite activity. But when something goes wrong, a smooth claims process can make a difficult situation much easier. Here's how to set yourself up for success.
1. Report Claims Promptly
Don't wait to file. Most policies require "prompt" notification, and waiting can complicate your claim. Even if you're not sure about the extent of damage, report it. You can always provide more details later.
Call us first—we'll help you understand what to expect and guide you through the process.
2. Document Everything
Before you clean up or make repairs, document the damage:
- Take photos and videos from multiple angles
- Make a list of damaged or lost items
- Keep damaged items if possible (the adjuster may need to see them)
- Save all receipts for temporary repairs or additional living expenses
The more documentation you have, the smoother your claim will go.
3. Make Only Necessary Temporary Repairs
You're actually required to prevent further damage—like tarping a damaged roof or boarding up a broken window. But don't make permanent repairs until the adjuster has assessed the damage.
Keep all receipts for temporary repairs. These costs are typically covered by your policy.
4. Be Honest and Thorough
Provide accurate information to your adjuster. Exaggerating damage or including pre-existing issues can jeopardize your entire claim. At the same time, don't minimize—make sure everything is documented.
If you're not sure whether something is related to the claim, mention it anyway. The adjuster can determine what's covered.
5. Keep Records of All Communication
Document every conversation about your claim:
- Who you spoke with and when
- What was discussed and decided
- Any reference or claim numbers
Follow up phone calls with an email summary. This creates a paper trail that protects you if questions arise later.
